Novell, Userful, Omni: Bringing Linux to Schools

      by Wyatt Walter

Novell, Userful, and Omni have partnered to bring Linux into schools around the world. They call the initiative “Free the Penguins” and offer free licenses of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop or Desktop Multiplier under the program. SUSE Enterprise Desktop is Novell’s commercially supported Linux distribution. Desktop Multiplier is made by Omni and allows one workstation PC to be turned into up to 10 “terminals”. It also supports audio and USB drives to each workstation as well.

The group has announced that over 50 institutions in 29 states and 10 countries have participated thus far. During tough economic times, open source alternatives to more expensive proprietary software. Linux has been gaining popularity in the non-profit and education sector in order to decrease costs and will probably only continue to gain market share as we enter tougher times in the world economy. The Desktop Multiplier also allows organizations to cut costs in hardware since one PC can be split up into multiple user terminals.
