Great article! One of the best comparisons I've seen to date.

Great comments also, some other considerations.

1. Apple phase out of hardware. A 3 year old white iMac doesn't support 64-bit mode in Snow Leopard. A 5 year old Mac Pro is out of date and won't support the new OS due to lack of OSX support for Power PC.

2. I am curious as to a repair cost on something defective. I know there is a reliability chart online some where.

3. Now, Mac should have some type of antivirus included.

4. Apple care is only for 3 years. I don't believe they offer a 5 year one. I am curious to see what a repair costs after 3 vs the HP 5 year.

Overall still a very good comparison. Thank you!

@Walter: I use Avast on a cheap, 4-year old budget laptop and haven't noticed any noticable slowdown. But I suppose using freeware programs in a TCO wouldn't make it very accurate.

@David - I actually use OpenOffice for anything personal, so the cost wouldn't really exist for me on either but it was in there to compare "Apple vs Microsoft" costs. I have found that iWork can do everything that I've ever wanted, but just isn't my preference on program to use.

@blaize - I suppose you could run a free antivirus, but I haven't found an antivirus that slows down my PC any less than NOD32, plus it works quite well. As for the office suite, I included iWork which is the Apple product meant to compete with Office (to make it an Apple-ish arrangement of software).

Thanks for the feedback, all!

Interesting....you could save a buck or 2 on the PC side with something like Avast or AVG. Over a 5 year term this is $300 is savings. Also, I don't see an office suite on the Mac... That would increase its cost +200, or thereabouts.

Nicely done and very interested, though there remain a number of subjective items.

I am a Mac user through and through, but just can't survive on iWork alone. In a business environment, other than Keynote which is fantastic, iWork just won't do.
